This guide applies to Core2Duo LoRes WXGA (1280x800) and HiRes WXGA+ (1440x900) models. This guide was made with installation of ML 10.8(.0) + subsequent update to ML 10.8.3. Contributions/confirmations/issues are welcome on that matter.

The bootpacks were made out of the D630 nVidia ML bootpack where the DSDT table was replaced by the table from D620 GMA950 Lion bootpacks (LoRes or HiRes), appropriate kexts removed and/or added and plists replaced.

This guide assumes you're using a blank HDD, partitioned and formated GUID. No tests done on MBR partitioned HDD, so don't ask about it, try it for yourself and report back if appropriate.

:excl: Read the MacRumor guide thoroughly and follow it to the letter as far as creating the installer is concerned. Basically, if you don't have a legit copy of ML with the "Install Mountain Lion.app" application, forget it. The tool requires you to copy it to your "Applications" folder. It won't work if all you have is the InstallESD.dmg image.

:excl: Do not ask questions about MLPostFactor here. Go to the authors at MacRumors. It's not our hack, we did not make it, we don't support it.

Phase 1: initial ML installation in mainstream 64bit kernel mode with unsupported graphics

  1. make the usual myHack USB installer (ML 10.8(.0)), using the above LoRes or HiRes bootpack.
  2. boot myHack installer and install ML 10.8(.0).
  3. reboot into ML and complete 1st boot setup.
  4. you're now in ML 10.8(.0) with default graphics at 1024x768 and without graphics acceleration.
  5. If you have not already done so, remove your myHack USB installer and put it aside.
  6. install combo update 10.8.3 (your wireless may not be supported at that stage, so use Ethernet port or install appropriate Wifi kext).
  7. reboot into ML 10.8.3, still with default graphics and without acceleration.
  8. if you have used myHack 3.2 to install ML, you may encounter KP on EFIRunTime/EFINVRAM at 1st boot. Boot ML via your USB installer bootloader, then download & run Chameleon Wizard and install Chameleon v2248 or later on your ML partition. If you have used myHack 3.1.2, you should be Ok.

Phase 2: MLPostFactor

  1. download MLPostFactor off the Net (EDIT 28 Mar 2015: sorry, original links posted in 2013 are dead now)
  2. create a new small partition on your HDD (8 to 16GB) or insert and erase your myHack USB installer (or any other available external media).
  3. following MLPF instructions to the letter, run MLPostFactor and create an ML installer on the freshly created spare HDD partition or freshly erased USB key. Select the "ML 10.8.0-10.8.2" case and run the app. If you've purchased and downloaded ML 10.8.3, select that version instead.
  4. upon completion, create a folder called "Extra" at the root of that installer media and copy DSDT table + SMBIOS & Cham boot plist files there.
  5. if you have a Bluetooth module, turn off your wireless services with the side switch (or laptop will look for a BT keyboard at next step and you'd need to hook up a USB keyboard).
  6. reboot off your initial ML disk/partition, interrupt the boot process at the Chameleon delay bar and select this newly created ML installer partition/disk with options & flag: DSDT=/Extra/ arch=i386 -f
  7. once installer is loaded, do not actually proceed with any installation (it would not be bootable). Go to "Utilities" in the menu bar and select MLPostFactor.
  8. when MLPostFactor app kicks in, click "Continue" until you're offered to select a destination volume.
  9. in the list available under the HDD icon, select your previously-made ML 10.8.3 installation, check the "10.8.3" case and click "Install MLPostFactor".
  10. upon completion, click "Quit MLPostFactor", quit installation program and reboot in ML 10.8.3 with flag and boot option: "-f arch=i386". If you switched off wireless services, turn the switch back on before the reboot. You will now have full QE/CI !
  11. download and install EDP.
  12. launch EDP 5 and do a system build for your specific D620 GMA950 model (LoRes or HiRes).
  13. open up Chameleon wizard and go to the boot plist tab. Check "32-bit (i386)" case to ensure your system boots in 32bit kernel mode.
  14. open up Terminal and type "sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel -a i386" to rebuild 32bit mode cache; this will remove the need to boot with "-f" flag.

That's it, enjoy ML on your previously unsupported D620 GMA950.

Remember that this hack is quite aggressive in the way it reverts to DP1 files and older graphics drivers (GMA950 kexts, OpenGL libraries), so you may find that things do not work. Again, don't ask for support here, go to the authors at MacRumors.

To update to 10.8.4, use Combo Update + MLPF v0.3 as explained in D430 guide here: https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/2467-installing-ml-on-d430-gma950-with-full-qeci/&do=findComment&comment=20838

To install 10.8.4 directly, apply the installation procedure with 10.8.4 install app & MLPF v0.3 from the onset.

For ML 10.8.5, whether an update from an earlier release or a direct installation, follow exact same process as for ML 10.8.4 with MLPF v0.3 for ML10.8.4 (MLPF having never updated to reflect for ML 10.8.5).

Apple freshly published Security Update 2014-004 1.0 breaks MLPF installation. It reinstates IOHIDFamily.kext v1.8.1 in /S/L/E which subsequently breaks startup. The fix is to revert to the previous MLPF version v1.7.1 of the kext. To do this easily, just install the attached kext in /E/E and run myFix (quick). The system will then be restored to full operation.

The kext is available here.

Apple's Security Update 2015-001 breaks MLPF installations. It installs:
i) a new kernel v12.6.0
ii) a new System.kext v12.6.0

The security update can only be safely be applied on a MLPF installation if the following actions are undertaken before subsequent reboot:
1) replace new ML kernel v12.6.0 by DP1's v12.0.0
2) replace new System.kext v12.6.0 by DP1's v12.0.0 directly in /S/L/E (do not place it /E/E, it won't work).

Unless those replacements are done, the MLPF installation will be unbootable.

The following 3 kexts also appear to need roll-back in order to retain Bluetooth services and kextcache:

1) IOBluetoothFamily.kext (back to v4.0.8)

2) IOBluetoothHIDDriver.kext (back to v4.0.8)

3) IOSerialFamily.kext (back to v10.0.5)

The files are available here.

Apple's Security Update 2015-004 will again break MPLF. In addition to the same files as mentioned above, it also installs IOSurface kext v86.0.5 in /S/L/E. A rollback to version v80.0.2 is necessary to fix the MLPF installation.

The file is available here.
